Andreas Haefliger Performs Schumann's Piano Concerto with the Minnesota Orchestra; Jesús López-Cobos conducts

Spanish conductor Jesús López-Cobos leads the Minnesota Orchestra in concerts that include music by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel and Manuel de Falla

Pianist Andreas Haefliger returns to Minneapolis to solo with Minnesota Orchestra for the first time since 2007

Spanish conductor Jesús López-Cobos makes a long-awaited debut at Orchestra Hall in Minnesota Orchestra performances on March 18 and 19. The concerts begin with Schumann’s Overture to Manfred. Then López-Cobos and the Orchestra partner with the extraordinary Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger, a frequent guest of the Orchestra, for Schumann’s beloved Piano Concerto. After intermission, Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole and de Falla’s two suites from The Three-Cornered Hat—all of which were inspired by Spanish culture—will fill Orchestra Hall with the brilliant colors of the conductor’s homeland.

The concert is performed at the Orchestra’s home venue in downtown Minneapolis, Orchestra Hall, on Friday, March 18, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, March 19, at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $79. Tickets are available online at minnesotaorchestra.org and by phone at 612-371-5656. For purchasing details, refer to the section at the conclusion of this press release.

Jesús López-Cobos, conductor
Jesús López-Cobos is conductor emeritus of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, having served as the orchestra’s music director from 1986 to 2001. Previously he held positions as principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic, general music director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and music director of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. He completed a seven-year tenure as music director of the Teatro Real in Madrid in 2010. He has regularly conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Andreas Haefliger, piano
Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger, known for his insightful interpretations of Beethoven, is highly sought after as a soloist and chamber musician. Among the many top ensembles he has performed with are the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, London Symphony and Vienna Symphony. Also a superb recitalist, he has performed in venues across Europe, North America and Asia. He has made many recordings including a disc of Schubert’s Goethe songs with Matthias Goerne, which was awarded the German Record Critic’s Award. In 2016 he performs with distinguished flute player Marina Piccinini, his wife, on an extensive tour of the U.S. More: andreashaefliger.com.

Schumann, Ravel and de Falla
In his Overture to Manfred, Robert Schumann tells the tale of a brooding nobleman with melancholy music—first slow, then passionate. Then, in the Piano Concerto, he carefully intertwines the solo and orchestral parts, traveling from tender melodies to a celebratory finale.

Maurice Ravel grew up familiar with traditional Spanish music, thanks to his mother’s Basque heritage. He drew on this for his Rapsodie espagnole, incorporating into the music an understated Malagueña and a seductive Habanera. Finally, Manuel de Falla’s suites are a mosaic of vibrant dances and colorful melodies infused with the character and charm of the Spanish countryside.
