VICE PRESIDENT OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS

The Minnesota Orchestra is the largest performing arts organization in the state and one of America’s top symphonic ensembles. Now in its second century, the Orchestra continues a tradition of world-renowned artistic excellence, adventurous programming, and a visionary commitment to building the orchestra of tomorrow, under the musical direction of Osmo Vanska. 

The Vice President of Finance and Operations will be responsible for all finance, accounting, tax, and treasury functions, all Human Resources functions and all IT functions, including all matters related to computer hardware, software and communications systems for the Orchestra.

JOB DUTIES:

Finance and Accounting:

  • Responsible for supervision of general ledger, endowment, pension, investment and revenue accounting.
  • Responsible for preparation of financial statements including coordination and oversight of monthly closing procedures, preparation of monthly financial statements and related financial analysis. Review of balance sheet and income statement accounts, as analyzed by accounting staff, on a monthly or quarterly basis.    Establishes necessary control procedures in all facets of accounting cycle.
  • Oversee financial systems including system generated reports and maintenance of the chart of accounts;
  • Supervise and oversee the endowment, property and planned giving accounting functions, including reviewing endowment schedules, fixed asset schedules, and endowment and pension investment reports.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including maintaining an effective cash management strategy for the investment of operating cash balances based on projections of future cash flows.
  • Prepare federal and state tax returns and schedules for government agencies, including annual Federal Form 990. Establish and maintain timely federal and state estimated tax payments.
  • Coordinate annual audits of the financial records of the organization and its two defined benefit pension plans, serving as liaison with outside auditors. Oversee the preparation of required audit schedules (including any required schedules of federal award expenditures), preparation of audited financial statements and related footnotes, audit adjusting entries and review and update of management letter comments.  Prepare board authorizations of year-end transfers and other related activity.
  • Serve as liaison to the Audit, Finance and Investment Committees of the Board of Directors;
  • Review and file 5500 reports for the two pension plans ensuring coordination between auditors and actuary during the process; initiate and oversee filings with the Pension Benefit Guaranty Board (PBCG).
  • Serve as lead on budgeting process, reviewing and interpreting monthly, quarterly and annual financial results. Supervise preparation of current year forecasts and future year budgets and long-range projections.

Human Resources:

  • Supervise the Director of Human Resources;
  • Oversee all HR functions, including payroll, compensation, benefits administration and personnel management;
  • Provide strategic oversight for personnel planning and implementation;
  • Ensure HR functions are designed and implemented to maximize a positive and supportive work culture.

Technology and Digital Services:

  • Supervise Director of Digital Services;
  • Provide strategic oversight for information technology services: software, hardware, Orchestra Hall technology, remote access services;
  • Lead an ongoing process of strategic and budgetary review and planning for technology services, in conjunction with the Director of Digital Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting or business administration. CPA or MBA is a plus.
  • Minimum ten years’ experience in leadership position related to management of finance, IT and HR; not-for-profit experience preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of computer-based financial management systems (including a high level of proficiency in Excel or similar spreadsheet software).
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to the mission of the Minnesota Orchestra.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time;
  • Must be able to speak and write proficiently in English;
  • Must be able to use a computer (with or without accommodation);
  • Ability to lift objects up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
