Copland’s beautiful ballet Appalachian Spring begins as quietly as dawn and grows out of that peaceful place where all great music starts. This American classic won hearts from the moment it was premiered—and won Copland the 1945 Pulitzer. You’ll hear the old Shaker tune “Simple Gifts” and a stunningly serene conclusion, just as warm and still as the sunset. After intermission, revel in the riotous celebration that defines Carmina burana, as we close a glorious season of subscription concerts at Orchestra Hall.
