MARCH / APRIL 2015 MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA
about this issue
Spring isn’t just in the air: it’s woven
throughout the programs you’ll hear
in Orchestra Hall these next months,
especially our classical offerings. Osmo
Vänskä leads concerts inspired by the
freshness of an Easter weekend, with
highlights including Messiaen’s
Exotic
Birds
and, not to be missed, Erin Keefe
as violin soloist in Vaughan Williams’
glorious
The Lark Ascending
. Another
program culminates in Stravinsky’s
unforgettable
Rite of Spring
, depicting
a primal spring ceremony—a work
so revolutionary that we can still
understand why riots broke out at its
premiere. And Mahler’s monumental
Das Lied von der Erde
(Song of the Earth),
a further tribute to earth’s awakening,
is the centerpiece of concerts that begin
with Haydn’s craftily composed
Farewell
Symphony, performed a month before
we bid our own farewell to the Orchestra
as it journeys to Cuba.
There’s much more to set hearts
a-stirring—such as Rodgers and
Hammerstein’s
Carousel
, among the most
beloved of all American musicals, with
Sarah Hicks conducting a production
complete with brilliant singer-actors,
costumes and choreography. Also high-
energy are performances by Eileen Ivers,
champion of the Irish fiddle, and her
band Immigrant Soul; trumpet virtuoso
Chris Botti; the inimitable Preservation
Hall Jazz Band; and songstress Ann
Hampton Callaway, in a salute to Barbra
Streisand. Add a Brahms-focused Inside
the Classics program and two family
concerts, and you have more than enough
pleasures—and thrills—to fill your spring
with memorable musical experiences!
