TEXT AND TRANSLATION:
REQUIEM
Requiem aeternam dona eis,
Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus in
Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in
Jerusalem;
Exaudi orationem meam,
ad te omnis caro veniet.
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.
Dies irae, dies illa
solvet saeclum in favilla,
teste David cum Sibylla.
Quantus tremor est futurus,
quando Judex est venturus,
cuncta stricte discussurus!
Tuba mirum spargens sonum,
per sepulchra regionum,
coget omnes ante thronum.
Mors stupebit et natura,
cum resurget creatura
judicanti responsura.
Liber scriptus proferetur,
in quo totum continetur,
unde mundus judicetur.
Judex ergo cum sedebit,
quidquid latet, apparebit;
nil inultum remanebit.
Grant them eternal rest, oh
Lord,
and let eternal light shine
upon them.
A hymn in Zion is fitting to
you, God,
and a vow will be made to
you in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer,
all flesh will come to you.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy,
Lord, have mercy.
That day, the day of wrath
will dissolve the age in ashes,
as David and the Sybil
prophesied.
How great the terror will be
when the judge is coming
and everything will be
thoroughly reviewed.
The trumpet, scattering its
astonishing sound through
the graves of all the lands,
will herd all before the throne.
Death and Nature will be
stupefied
when all creation rises again
to answer to the judge.
The written book will be
brought forth
in which everything is entered
from which the world will be
judged.
Then, when the judge takes
his seat,
whatever is hidden will
appear.
Dies irae, dies illa
solvet saeclum in favilla,
teste David cum Sibylla.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
Quem patronum rogaturus,
cum vix justus sit securus?
Rex tremendae majestatis,
qui salvandos salvas gratis,
salva me, fons pietatis.
Recordare, Jesu pie,
quod sum causa tuae viae;
ne me perdas illa die.
Quaerens me, sedisti lassus;
redemisti crucem passus:
tantus labor non sit cassus.
Juste judex ultionis,
donum fac remissionis
ante diem rationis.
Ingemisco tamquam reus:
culpa rubet vultus meus:
supplicanti parce, Deus.
Qui Mariam absolvisti,
et latronem exaudisti,
mihi quoque spem dedisti.
Preces meae non sunt dignae;
sed tu bonus fac benigne,
ne perenni cremer igne.
Inter oves locum praesta.
et ab hoedis me sequestra,
statuens in parte destra.
Confutatis maledictis
flammis acribus addictis,
voca me cum benedictis.
Oro supplex et acclinis,
cor contritum quasi cinis,
gere curam mei finis.
Dies irae, dies illa
solvet saeclum in favilla,
teste David cum Sibylla.
Nothing will remain unpunished.
That day, the day of wrath
will dissolve the age in ashes,
as David and the Sybil
prophesied.
Then what am I, a wretch, to
say?
To which protector will I appeal,
when even the righteous man
is hardly safe?
King of awe-inspiring majesty,
you freely save those who are
to be saved,
save me, fountain of pity.
Remember, holy Jesus,
that I am the reason for your
journey,
do not destroy me on that day.
Seeking me, you sat down weary,
you saved me by suffering on
the cross,
don’t let such labor be in vain.
Fair judge of punishment,
grant the gift of remission
before the day of accounting.
I groan like a guilty man,
my sins redden my face.
Spare the supplicant, God.
You who absolved Mary
and listened to the thief
have also given hope to me.
My prayers are not worthy,
but you, who are good, make
them good,
lest I be cremated in the
eternal fire.
Save me a place among the
sheep,
standing at your right side,
and separate me from the
goats.
When the damned are
overthrown
and consigned to the burning
flames,
call me with the blessed.
Supplicant and bowed down,
I beg,
my heart almost burned out
with contrition,
help me at my end.
That day, the day of wrath
will dissolve the age in ashes,
as David and the Sybil
prophesied.
