JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2015 MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA
about this issue
If you were a friend of Tchaikovsky’s
in the late 1870s or one of Prokofiev’s
around 1935, you would probably have
shared their extreme frustration at the
way eminent artists, supposedly among
the most supremely skilled of their
age, reacted to the composers’ brilliant
new works. The great Leopold Auer,
for whom Tchaikovsky wrote his Violin
Concerto, pronounced it “unplayable,”
and after one look at Prokofiev’s
Romeo and Juliet
ballet score, the
Bolshoi dismissed it as “undanceable.”
Fortunately for music lovers ever
since, these works soon found other
champions and became mainstays of
concert hall repertoire. We are thrilled
to count them among the many lush
and dramatic selections the Minnesota
Orchestra performs this January and
February as part of our Shakespeare
Winterfest—five weekends of concerts
structured around musical treasures
inspired by the Bard’s plays.
Our 2015 concerts begin with something
quite different: seven very new works
offered as “Future Classics,” all by
composers taking part in the Composer
Institute co-presented by the Orchestra
and the American Composers Forum.
In the tradition of Tchaikovsky and
Prokofiev, these scores push boundaries—
but are anything but “unplayable” in
the hands of our Orchestra members,
who perform these new works with the
same extraordinary skill they bring to
the magnificent Verdi Requiem late in
February, as well as to a family concert
and popular “That’s Amore!” program
also in this issue. Our New Year’s wish for
you: enjoy every opportunity to share in
the passion, beauty and power of music
brought to life by these masters!
