DECEMBER 2014 / ANNUAL REPORT MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA
about this issue
December, as we know, can seem a
rather hectic month, but there are
lovely ways to keep it pleasant. One is
to remember the themes of generosity
and sharing that underlie a great many
traditional holiday activities, not least
of which are this month’s concerts.
Handel’s thrilling
Messiah
, for instance,
was first offered as a benefit for the poor
and sick of Dublin; an instant success, it
grew even more famous through annual
performances in London, raising funds
for the Foundling Hospital. Menotti’s
opera
Amahl and the Night Visitors
reaches directly into listeners’ hearts
with its unforgettable story of giving
and forgiving—and utterly beautiful
contributions from singers and ballet
dancers, as well as our Orchestra.
“Scandinavian Christmas” concerts
carry the glow of timeless Nordic carols
made even more wondrous by children’s
choirs and a Santa Lucia procession.
There’s also the Orchestra’s first-ever
collaboration with the Rose Ensemble,
Doc Severinsen’s beloved “Jingle Bell
Doc” concerts, performances by the
Canadian Brass and Kathy Mattea, and
celebratory concerts to ring in the New
Year—music that is richest when shared.
We hope you treasure it all. And as you
review our 2014 Annual Report, know
that we are deeply grateful for what you
share with us: your involvement with so
many facets of the Orchestra’s activity,
from artistic growth to community
engagement; your financial and personal
commitment; and above all, your love of
music—the beautiful tie that binds us all.
