Cécile McLorin
has earned wide
acclaim for her unique and
theatrical interpretations
of little-known and rarely
recorded jazz and blues
compositions. Active as
a performer, composer
and lyricist in multiple
languages, she is popular
in both Europe and the
U.S., performing alongside
renowned musicians and her
own band at major clubs, festivals and concert venues. Salvant,
born in Florida to French and Haitian parents, first studied
classical piano and voice. After moving to France in 2007, she
studied with Jean-François Bonnel, delving into improvisation,
instrumental and vocal repertoire from the early 1900s onward.
In 2009 she recorded her debut album
; a year later she
won the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington, D.C. Her
2012 album
, recorded with Aaron Diehl, Rodney
Whitaker, Herlin Riley and James Chirillo, was nominated for

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
widely recognized as one of the world’s premier large jazz
ensembles—is led by trumpeter-composer Wynton Marsalis
and includes 14 additional top soloists and ensemble
players. JLCO, the resident orchestra of Jazz at Lincoln
Center since 1988, plays many concerts at its home venue,
New York’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, and spends several
months each year touring across the U.S. and around the
globe. It performs traditional jazz repertoire as well as newly
commissioned works by Marsalis, Benny Carter, Wycliffe
Gordon, Ted Nash and other notable talents. In recent years
it has performed with such renowned orchestras as the
New York Philharmonic, Russian National Orchestra, Berlin
Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. JLCO’s
education and performance residencies have taken the
ensemble as far afield as France, Prague, Brazil and Japan.
JLCO has been featured on numerous television broadcasts

JLCO is integral to many of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s youth-
oriented offerings, including a family concert series, Jazz for
Young People, that often features JLCO. Other educational
programs of Jazz at Lincoln Center, including the Essentially
Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival,
reach more than 110,000 students, teachers and other
audience members. Among the institution’s honors is a
prestigious Peabody Award, recognizing the weekly radio

Active in music education, Marsalis has conducted numerous
programs for students of all ages and has released six books, most

by Paul Rogers. He is a U.N. Messenger of Peace and a cultural
ambassador through the U.S. State Department’s CultureConnect
program. He was instrumental in the Higher Ground Hurricane
Relief concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center, which raised
more than $3 million to benefit the musicians, music industry-
related enterprises and others from the Greater New Orleans
