America Riffs: A Veterans Day Celebration
Charles Lazarus
, a
member of the Minnesota
Orchestra since 2000, has
masterminded several
original productions with
the Orchestra, including the
symphonic pops concerts
“A Night in the Tropics”
and “A Big Band Valentine’s
Day Celebration”; in both
programs, he served as
soloist, composer and
bandleader. In April
and May 2015 he will
perform as soloist with the
Orchestra in the world premiere of Steve Heitzeg’s
American
Nomad
. Since debuting at Carnegie Hall at age 19 with the
New York String Orchestra, he has been a member of the
Dallas Brass, Meridian Arts Ensemble and Canadian Brass;
he has also performed with such ensembles as the New York
Big Brass, New York Trumpet Ensemble, London Brass and
Montreal Symphony. In addition, he frequently performs at
festivals, conferences and other events. His many recordings
include the CDs

Sarah Hicks
is
principal conductor of the
Minnesota Orchestra’s
Live at Orchestra Hall
concert series, of which this
season’s highlights include
a staging of Rodgers and
Hammerstein’s
Carousel
,
a concert with trumpeter
Chris Botti, and screenings
of the films
Singin’ in the
Rain
and
Disney’s Fantasia
with the scores performed
live. She also conducts the
Inside the Classics series,
which returns to Orchestra Hall in March 2015. During the
2014-15 season she makes return visits to the San Francisco
Symphony, Detroit Symphony and Alabama Symphony, and
she debuts with the Santa Fe Symphony, Tokyo Philharmonic,
Edmonton Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Nagoya
Philharmonic and Kansai Philharmonic. In 2011 she toured
with British rock icon Sting, leading 31 concerts over two

Tommy Barbarella
, who has worked extensively with Prince,
has also collaborated with such artists as Art Garfunkel, the
Backstreet Boys and Clay Aiken, and is an accomplished
composer.
Jeff Bailey
is active as a performer, composer, producer and
educator. He has performed with many renowned jazz artists,
and he is bass department head at McNally Smith College of
Music.
David Schmalenberger
performs with nationally renowned
artists and is active as a clinician. He is also assistant head of
the percussion department at McNally Smith College of Music.
Tonia Hughes
’ vocal style combines elements of gospel,
blues, jazz, R&B and worship music. Her newest release,
I’m Ready Now
, has garnered national acclaim and exposure.
