SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2014 MINNESOTA ORCHESTRA
about this issue
Welcome back for a fresh new season of
great music in Orchestra Hall! You’ll find
it includes an array of genres and styles as
varied as the colorful autumn leaves drifting
to the ground. And the many concerts
gathered into this issue of
Showcase
give
quite a taste of what is to come.
For greatness on a grand scale, consider
the opening concert: our magnificent
Minnesota Orchestra plus a glorious star,
soprano Renée Fleming, joining forces
with Music Director Osmo Vänskä for a
“Starry, Starry Night” gala benefit. Soon
after come brilliant programs of the music
of Richard Strauss, from youthful pieces
signaling his early genius to the burnished
masterpieces of his later years. Later this
fall the spotlight shines on unforgettable
Russian works, from light-hearted to
impassioned. We experience music as it
has thrilled young people across decades—
from the ingenious classics-plus-animation
breakthrough in Disney’s
Fantasia
of 1940
and
Fantasia 2000
to our entrancing
space-themed “Out of this World” concerts
hosted by Christopher Lloyd. And to usher
in the the holidays, we proudly present
some of the greatest jazz artists of our age:
trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at
Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Throughout these months we salute
friends old and new, not least of whom
are the audience members and donors
without whom there can be no great
orchestra making great music. As Interim
CEO Kevin Smith observes in an interview,
“symphony” literally means “sounding
together.” Know that you have our eternal
gratitude for
sounding together
with us,
giving this symphony its life.
