Bobby McFerrin: spirityouall
Saturday, April 19, 2014, 8 pm Orchestra Hall
Ten-time Grammy Award-winner
Bobby McFerrin
has inspired and entertained audiences all over
the world with performances and recordings that blur the distinction between pop
music and fine art. He has single-handedly redefined the role of the human
voice, inspiring a generation of singers with his musical journey—from his
a cappella hit
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
to his collaborations with Yo-Yo
Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic; and from his legendary
solo vocal concerts to his improvising choir Voicestra. His long history
with the Twin Cities includes many performances at Orchestra Hall,
collaborations with the choral community and his tenure from 1994
to 1999 as creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
McFerrin’s newest album,
, mixes new ingredients into
the melting pot of Americana, furthering his quest to integrate
influences: bluegrass, progressive rock, jazz, baroque music
and world music. The album, which includes familiar tunes as
well as original songs, honors the legacy of McFerrin’s father,
the operatic baritone Robert McFerrin, Sr., the first African-
American to sign a contract with the Metropolitan Opera Company.
Tonight’s roster of performers includes McFerrin’s daughter,
vocalist Madison McFerrin, adding another dimension to this
deeply personal celebration of McFerrin’s musical heritage.
