and Shostakovich Five
SCHUMANN Shostakovich
Symphony No. 5
Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 is one of the first symphonic
pieces I ever heard as a high school student. I remember being
almost shocked when I heard the piano come in with those big
chords in the first movement. The slow movement has such an
amazing buildup in the strings to a big climax.
Celebrating
Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring
STRAVINSKY The Rite of
Spring
What is there to say about Stravinsky's Rite of Spring?
It's a stunning piece of music both to listen to and to play.
Every time we pull this piece out to perform, I am humbled by
its technical challenges.
Berlioz'
Symphonie Fantastique
BERLIOZ Symphonie
Fantastique
I find Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique to be one of
the greatest works ever written. It is rich in its orchestral
colors and uses specific instrumentation to its fullest
potential.
