This concert's masterpieces brim with the powerful emotions Elgar and Prokofiev felt after surviving a world war. That World War I took England's best and brightest is reflected in Elgar's haunting Cello Concerto, filled with elegiac beauty. By contrast, Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony came as World War II turned in favor of the Allies, and it bristles with energy and optimism. Joining us for their Minnesota debuts are two eagerly awaited guests: German cellist Alban Gerhardt and the young Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu.
