Frequently asked questions

What should I wear?
The dress code for Symphony Ball is “black tie admired.” A tuxedo or suit always works for the gents, but ladies! Will 2016 be the year you splurge on the ball gown of your dreams, or might you nab that flirty flapper inspired dress with the long ropes of pearls? Going with colleagues? Glam up your little black dress with a special necklace or headpiece. Mandatory attire: shoes you can dance in!

What’s the difference between the Symphony Ball and the After Party?
Starting at 5:30 pm, Symphony Ball includes a sumptuous dinner, tempting auctions, and a dazzling performance by Minnesota Orchestra, as well as the After Party (formerly Crash the Ball), the celebratory event that follows the Ball, including swing dancing with the Wolverines, champagne and prohibition-era cocktails.

After Party tickets allow for two arrival time options:

Early Option: 7:30 pm
Guests who want to hear the live performance of Rhapsody in Blue by the Minnesota Orchestra and participate in the auctions are invited to join the Ball at 7:30 pm. The auctions include a great array of items, including private music lessons with various Minnesota Orchestra musicians, travel opportunities and culinary experiences. Then, stay and enjoy a great party with swing dancing and craft cocktails.

Drinks and Dancing Option: 9:30 pm
If you’re all about the dancing, plan to arrive at 9:30 pm, grab a prohibition-era cocktail and jump onto the dance floor with the big band performers, the Wolverines!

Symphony Ball Details

Guests will enjoy a custom menu from Fabulous Catering as well as delicious prohibition-era beverage selections. The 2016 live and silent auctions are built around a “bucket list” theme, promising exciting experiences and elegant opportunities. No Symphony Ball would be complete without a performance by the Minnesota Orchestra, who will perform the Symphony Ball title piece, Rhapsody in Blue. The evening will conclude with an After Party, featuring a swinging dance band, speakeasy surprises and more!

Under the leadership of Mary, Greg and Emily Sumners, the 2016 Symphony Ball will raise critical funds to support the artistic excellence and award-winning education and community engagement programs of the Minnesota Orchestra. This year’s Honorary Chairs are Jack and Cathy Farrell.

Evening Program:
5:30pm
Cocktails with the Travis Anderson Trio and Silent Auction Bidding  /  Balcony A and the N. Bud Grossman Mezzanine  / View auction catalog (pdf)
Patron-only lounge featuring Butch Thompson, piano  /  Cunningham Green Room

6:45pm Dinner  /  Target Atrium and Roberta Mann Grand Foyer
Entrée options include herb marinated grilled quail with duck confit (gluten free), braised daube of beef with red wine demi glace (gluten free), or wild mushroom and leek tartlets (vegetarian).
