Handel's Messiah

About this Concert:

Few composers have ever matched Handel for the sense of awe he creates with his Messiah. Our special guest this year is Scotsman Douglas Boyd who conducted the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra so beautifully for several years.

More Details:

  • Long before Douglas Boyd picked up a conductor’s baton, he was an oboist. He was a founding member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, serving as its principal oboe for 21 years.
  • Gentlemen, please don’t wear your dress swords: men in mid-18th-century Dublin who bought tickets to the Messiah premiere were asked to leave their steel at home because the hall was sold out and every spare inch of room was spoken for.
  • And ladies, no hoops: same for the women, who were asked to keep the dress-line slim to save space at the premiere.
  • After a dark and dramatic overture, the first words you hear sung in Messiah are “Comfort ye…” which is kind of what we all need to hear at this time of year, right?
