Inside the Classics: Fairy Tales from the Dark Side

BERLIOZ
Symphonie fantastique

It’s one of the most peculiar works in the classical repertoire, featuring visions, witches, romantic despair, even a macabre execution. But it’s also a musical milestone: The Symphonie fantastique sparked a brushfire of what’s called “programmatic” music, symphonies designed to tell a specific story. This serious classical piece was also written under the influence of opium (don’t try this at home!). Where—besides that mind-altering trip—does this amazing work come from? Explore its origins, its influence and its enduring popularity with Sarah and Sam as your guides.

About Inside the Classics

Intrigued by classical music? Join violist-host Sam Bergman and conductor Sarah Hicks as they explore classical favorites during the first half of the concert. After intermission, experience a complete performance of the featured work.
