Inside the Classics: Beethoven's Tenth

BRAHMS
Symphony No. 1

Of course Beethoven wrote only (only!) nine symphonies. But he exerted an enormous musical influence over Brahms, who was seen as Beethoven’s natural successor and, in fact, was expected to top the master. It took Brahms more than 21 years to create his First Symphony, which has such strong echoes of Beethoven that after its premiere in 1876, a prominent conductor nicknamed it “Beethoven’s Tenth.”

What was it about Beethoven that Brahms found so compelling—and so intimidating at the same time? And what is it about the sound of both composers’ symphonies that has made them timeless favorites? Join Sarah, Sam and the Orchestra as we celebrate these giants of classical music.
