Minnesota Orchestra Plays Gershwin and Ives

About This Concert:

Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra have been invited to perform at one of the world’s most famous classical music festivals, London’s BBC Proms. Vänskä leads the Orchestra in an all-American program comprising Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, with Inon Barnatan as soloist, and Charles Ives’ visionary Second Symphony.

Following the performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Orchestra embarks on a five-city tour to South Africa from August 7 to 19.

Classical Minnesota Public Radio will share a live broadcast of the Proms concert on August 6 at 1 p.m. Central on its statewide network, including KSJN 99.5 FM in the Twin Cities, as well as online at classicalmpr.org.

  • The BBC Proms, the world’s largest classical music festival, is a 123-year tradition in London that encompasses eight weeks of programming and more than 90 concerts, with an aim to bring the best classical music to the widest audience. The 2018 Proms season runs from July 13 to September 8.
  • Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra have appeared together at the BBC Proms twice before: first in 2006 and again in 2010 when they offered a pair of concerts, including a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the BBC Symphony Chorus.
  • The Minnesota Orchestra’s performance of Charles Ives’ five-movement Symphony No. 2, will mark only the second time that the work has ever been performed at the Proms.
  • This concert will also be broadcast live throughout the U.K. on the BBC.
