Theater and genius in their many forms are showcased, from the stage to ballet, even to Hollywood! Mendelssohn produced his famous Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream when he was just 17, and it never fails to delight. Erich Korngold made his mark in ‘30s and ‘40s movie spectacles, but he also composed remarkable concert music. Gil Shaham (hailed by the LA Times for his “brilliant, almost ecstatic performance”) has made the Korngold Concerto one of his signature works. We close with Ravel’s timeless Daphnis and Chloe, written for the legendary Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes. Wonderful, dramatic music!
"Once I... heard a mermaid...
Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath
That the rude sea grew civil at her song
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres..."
— Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
