Chivalry and Romance: Bruckner's Fourth Symphony

WALTON
Suite from Henry V

BRUCKNER
Symphony No. 4, Romantic

The curtain rises on our Shakespeare Winterfest with Prince Hal, newly crowned King of England, leading his men to victory over the French. The immensely imaginative William Walton penned the score for Lawrence Olivier’s 1944 film version of Henry V — and it is pure cinematic sweep. Mark Wigglesworth then leads our star musicians into the medieval forest of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony. Called “Romantic” by the composer himself, the work is his most popular, and conjures storybook castles, mounted knights and the call to the hunt.

“Thy voice is music.”

— Shakespeare, Henry V
