Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
with Wynton Marsalis
Sun Mar 14, 2010 7PM
+ Details
The world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, an
assemblage of 15 star soloists led by jazz master Wynton
Marsalis, is hailed as “an extraordinarily versatile orchestra”
by the Los Angeles Times. Playing an amazing repertoire
of timeless jazz masterpieces and brilliant original
compositions, this spring concert features works inspired by the
visual arts, including selections from a new suite, Portrait
in Seven Shades, composed by JLCO reedman Ted Nash. Nash’s
suite consists of seven movements, each inspired by a master of
modern art who worked in the century around the apex of jazz:
Chagall, Dalí, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Pollock and Van Gogh.
The band will also perform tunes by jazz greats Count Basie,
Mary Lou Williams and others.
Please note: The Minnesota Orchestra does not perform on

“There was never any doubt about her lustrous voice, with its
gospel and blues roots, its jazzy suppleness, its languid timing
and its rich empathy.”
— The New York Times
With her soulful contralto, Lizz Wright has been compared to
Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Nina Simone and Odetta, to name
just a few. And it’s that earthy voice that commands
spine-tingling attention especially in live performance.
Celebrated as one of the jazz world’s rising stars, this
singer-songwriter is clearly on a journey—just as you will be on
hearing her moving renditions of music that is at once intimate
and technically superb. Don’t miss this exhilarating performance
accompanied by the Minnesota Orchestra.
And there’s more: the second half of this stunning program
features clarinetist Evan Christopher, also with the Orchestra,
showcasing his authentic New Orleans/Créole sound and premiering
his great new piece commissioned by the Orchestra, Treat it
Gentle Suite.
