Matthew Frischman

Matthew Frischman

Matthew Frischman joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 1998 and served as acting co-principal bass from summer 2012 to February 2015. Prior to his appointment here, he served as assistant principal bass of the Virginia Symphony in Norfolk from 1994 to 1998, and as assistant principal bass at the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina. He also played with the New World Symphony from 1993 to 1994.

Frischman earned a diploma from the Juilliard School of Music, studying with Homer Mensch and serving as principal bass of the pre-college division’s orchestra. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where his teacher was Roger M. Scott.

Frischman toured Japan with the Music from Curtis Chamber Orchestra and served as principal bass of the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra for three of his college summers. As a chamber musician, he has also performed with the Miami String Quartet. At Sommerfest 2011 he played Hasenöhrl’s quintet arrangement of Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks.

Beyond the concert hall, Frischman is a dedicated triathlete, spending much of his free time training for and competing in triathlons both locally and nationally.
