The Chieftains 50th Anniversary Tour 2012: Voice of Ages

March 4 concert to highlight Celtic harp, fiddle, vocals and step-dancing

Special Presentation

(February 7, 2012) In a joyous 50th anniversary celebration, six-time Grammy Award-winners The Chieftains return to Orchestra Hall in a concert slated for Sunday, March 4, at 7 p.m.  The group is led by its founder, Paddy Moloney, who composes or arranges much of the band’s music; additional core members include Kevin Conneff and Matt MolloyWelcomed as special guests are three outstanding step and tap dancers, including sibling superstars Jon Pilatzke and Nathan Pilatzke and Irish champion Cara Butler—along with Celtist harpist Triona Marshall, fiddler Deanie Richardson and vocalists Jeff White and Alyth McCormack.

The Chieftains are Ireland’s official ambassadors of music, and their history has no shortage of highlights. They were the first Western musical group ever to perform on the Great Wall of China, and in 1979 they performed for an audience of more than 100 million during the Pope’s visit to Ireland. A 1990 concert commemorated the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Moloney performed at a memorial service in New York for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The ensemble has appeared with many symphony and folk orchestras worldwide, and have collaborated with musical legends from many genres.

The Chieftains recently released Voice of Ages, a recording on which they perform interpretations of traditional songs in collaboration with prominent rising artists, including Bon Iver, the Decemberists and Paolo Nutini. On their current U.S.  tour, which begins in Santa Barbara, California on February 17, and culminates at Carnegie Hall on St. Patrick’s Day, they are joined by special guest singers, instrumentalists and dancers from the U.S., Canada, Ireland and Scotland.
