(January 20, 2012) A musical Valentine from two standout contemporary jazz vocalists—Lizz Wright and Kurt Elling—marks the opening concert of the 2011-12 Piper Jaffray Jazz at Orchestra Hall series. Lizz Wright's smoldering, sensual voice packs an emotional wallop, wowing audiences as she did at Orchestra Hall in 2010, and Kurt Elling's rich baritone fills the hall with technical mastery and emotional depth. On this evening they each bring their singular sound to the stage for unforgettable solo sets.
The concert takes place at Orchestra Hall on Saturday, February 18, at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $55, with VIP seating at $65. For tickets, call Minnesota Orchestra Ticket Services at (612) 371-5656 or visit the Orchestra’s website, minnesotaorchestra.org.
Singer-songwriter Lizz Wright has earned international acclaim for her performances and recordings, moving freely between jazz, blues, gospel, folk, soul and R&B. She launched her career as a member of the Georgia-based jazz group In the Spirit and has since undertaken several solo and collaborative projects. In 2011 she toured throughout the U.S. and Europe with singers Angelique Kidjo and Dianne Reeves performing “Sing the Truth,” a tribute to such legendary women singers as Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta. Wright’s CDs include Dreaming Wide Awake, which topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart, and 2010’s Fellowship. More: lizzwright.net.
Kurt Elling is one of today’s most celebrated jazz vocalists. Winner of a 2010 Grammy Award and named Male Singer of the Year six times by the Jazz Journalists Association, he is nominated for a 2012 Grammy for his newest CD, The Gate. He performs original compositions as well as modern interpretations of standards, all of which are springboards for improvisation, scatting, spoken word and poetry. He has recorded and/or performed with such jazz luminaries as Dave Brubeck, Terence Blanchard and Jon Hendricks. He recently gave a performance commissioned for Jazz at Lincoln Center and sang at the Obama administration’s first state dinner. More: kurtelling.com.
