Brian Stokes Mitchell enjoys a rich and varied career on Broadway, television and film, and appears regularly in the great American concert halls. He has been featured in programs with such ensembles as the L.A. Philharmonic, Boston Pops, National Symphony and San Francisco Symphony, performing repertoire ranging from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess to David Del Tredici’s Rip Van Winkle, the latter in its world premiere. He has performed at the White House for Presidents Clinton and Obama, and has also sung at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center at Feinstein’s at the Regency.

For his stage work, Mitchell has earned four Tony nominations—winning for his role in Kiss Me, Kate—as well as a Drama Desk Award and a Distinguished Performance Award from the Drama League. In his most recent Broadway appearance, he starred alongside Patti LuPone in the 2010 musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. He has been featured in numerous films and TV series, including Trapper John, M.D.; Frasier; The Prince of Egypt; and 2011’s Jumping the Broom. His many recordings include a self-titled 2006 release for which he wrote many of the arrangements and orchestrations. Sarah Hicks, the Minnesota Orchestra’s principal conductor of pops and presentations, has led a broad range of programs since joining the Orchestra as assistant conductor in 2006. She takes the Orchestra Hall podium later this season to lead a danced-themed concert titled “Ballroom with a Twist,” a program of French music and a performance with Sweet Honey in the Rock, among other concerts.

Hicks’ 2011-12 schedule includes appearances with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and return engagements with the Florida Symphony Orchestra. This past summer she acted as conductor for Sting’s Symphonicities Tour, leading 31 concerts over two months in venues throughout Europe. In 2009 she was appointed associate conductor of the North Carolina Symphony. She was earlier affiliated with the Richmond Symphony, Philadelphia Singers, Reading Symphony Orchestra and Florida Philharmonic. More: minnesotaorchestra.org.
