Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Ladysmith Black Mambazo has introduced millions to the intricate rhythms and harmonies of South African singing. Founded in 1964 by Joseph Shabalala, the all-male a cappella ensemble rose to prominence after performing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland, and has since become a global pop culture phenomenon. It has performed on numerous film soundtracks and sung at the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony, the 1996 Summer Olympics and the inauguration of South African President Nelson Mandela. It has earned four Grammy Awards, most recently the 2013 Award for Best World Music CD. In 2014, the ensemble released its newest CD, Always With Us, a tribute to the group’s matriarch Nellie Shabalala, Joseph Shabalala’s wife, who passed away in 2002.
